From 1952 to 1955, he held some of the most important portfolios in the State Cabinet. In the first elected Punjab Government after independence, he looked after the re-settlement and rehabilitation of the refugees. Thereafter he served as General Secretary and then the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. He got elected to the first constituent assembly defeating Baba Gurdit Singh KamagataMaru in 1937 and again in 1942. He started his political career in the ShiromaniAkali Dal as a Sikh activist but lateraligned with the Indian National Congress as it was the main national level party fighting for independence at that time.
In 1929, he came back to India and jumped into the forefront of the struggle movement for independence and went to jails several times. He was highly influenced by the thoughts of Abraham Lincoln and Lenin at that time. In America, he joined the Gaddar party and remained active in its working.
There he did his Master’s Degree in Political Science from Berkeley University of San Francisco and Master’s in Economics from Ann Arbor University of Michigan. After that he left for USA for further studies. He got married to Sardarni Ram Kaur in the year 1919. Both his father and mother were social reformers and opened the first girls’ school of the area in their village.SardarPartap Singh Kairon got initial education in a nearby village school and then did his matric and ‘Gyani’ from Khalsa College, Amritsar. His father was an active leader of the Singh Sabha Movement. Sardar Partap Singh Kairon was born to SardarNihal SinghDhillon and BibiHarKaur on 1st October 1901 at village Kairon, Tehsil Patti, now District Tarn Taran.
